This happened to me once when I tried to cheat and ended up with a
"cheap plastic imitation."  It looked like the real thing until I
tried to ascend and the game ended.  IIRC, the only way to get around
this is to go to the depths of hell, retrieve the authentic goods and
then try to ascend.

Or you can make sure your wand of fire is blessed.
