This fictious name is WWWWolf (pronounced /wwulf/), or Weyfour WWWWolf (pronounced /weIfɔ: wwulf/). I usually don't care how people pronounce it. Or spell it, for that matter. It tends to be tricky. Just try to get it somewhat recognizable, please.
Firstly, I usually use the name WWWWolf (or Weyfour WWWWolf, as it goes more fully) in the Internet. So, in that sense, this is just a nickname for me. Completely self-picked. Nothing fancy about it.
Secondly, this also refers to the anthropomorphic wolf character. This is my typical "online avatar", as the fancier term goes. It's kind of roleplaying, it's kind of not. Something in between, really - a projection of social self or whatever difficult-sounding term people might use. No idea.
This wolf character is nothing more, nothing less, than an extension of my own self-image. This wolf here is just me, like I would like to be. It's not that I would actively seek to become one or anything, it's just one thing that might be cool if it were possible. Nor is it really what I really am right now... except that there are numerous similarities.
Here's how the character looks like in MUCKs.
Note that this morph is not necessarily the most current one. It is updated every so often.
Now this is a sight - a wolf that is at the same time big, bulky and tewwifying (or at least tewwifyingly yiffy), yet is clearly quite cute! Looks like here's a wolf who really can take advantage of the by-default Cuteness of his species without losing any of the nobility and grace. Or maybe those are just part of the Cuteness. He looks quite like an European timber wolf. He's called Weyfour WWWWolf. He's not a particularly unusual wolf in any case, but maybe just that fact *is* unusual. He mostly reminds you of a warrior monk - he appears to be serene, casual, and almost unmovable, quiet, relaxed, insightful and subtle. He smiles most of the time, and you get the distinct impression this is a real, genuine smile founded on contentment and harmony with the world and its inhabitants. He is quite definitely a Wolf. To wit, he's just this big heavily-built canid. He's a big thing, strong, definitely muscled, but his physique in general isn't very apparent unless he's without his shirt or something. In general, his features are a reasonable hybrid of a man and wolf; there's nothing really *exaggerated* about his appearance. His fur is gray in color, but it also has a noticeable tint of light brown. It is quite nicely groomed. The darker parts of the fur - the top of his head and his backside - are almost black, with likewise some brown here and there. He has gold-brown eyes, and has quite muscular arms and legs, hand-like paws and has plantigrade feet. His majestic dark-tipped tail is very very *BUSHY* - but likewise, not particularly untypical to wolves. It looks very soft and cute, far cuter than most fox tails. He's dressed very casually. He has rather well-fitting but worn blue jeans, and a college shirt with a symbol on it - a wolf pawprint, with two sperm cells forming a heart on top of it.
I have a separate page of these, most drawn by me, some drawn by others.
Out of thin air...
I originally picked up the name from somewhere. It had originally not much to do with the World Wide Web. Maybe, somewhere in my not-yet-grown brain, I had managed to merge WWW and Wolf into one word, and thought that was really cool.
I even used silly manglings like 'WwW-Wolf' ages ago. That was wayyyy before I found out about furries. (If it sounds childish, well, I was a child at the time =)
I found about furries through the demoscene, actually. I had stumbled to the online presence of Future Crew (who still haven't managed to produce much since that date, now busy with cooler projects =) and especially the page of the musician Peter Hajba, also known as Skaven. There I found out about FurryMUCK, eventually found Furcadia (which became the first online furry MU* I tried), and the rest is history.
That's a short story on how I found the furrydom - nothing really glorious or anything about that.
Oh yes, it does get mangled every now and then. The full name is Weyfour WWWWolf, which is officially just a single name - not a first name and surname combination as it may appear. (Reason? I don't have any stinking reasons. I'm caffeinated.) The name Weyfour is simple to explain: WWWWolf gets shortened to "W4", and it kind of stuck.
I've used variations of the name elsewhere. In case some place needs that 狼 to appear, the name gets often mangled to Weiforu (yes, I know, this isn't that correct mysterotransliterativation for Japanese; I'm trying to uphold the long, sacred traditions of Stupid Foreigners Speaking Languages They Can't Speak. At least I admit it freely. =) In fantasy RPGs (especially LotGD), I've been using Weiforius (if the other name was dog-Japanese, this one is clearly dog-Latin!) I use Weiforu as the alternate IRC nick, too.
I've sometimes used Wwwwolf which admittedly looks weird. Two places seem to like it. LPmuds seem to turn the name to that format no matter what (First capitalized, others lower-case). Wikis seem to like this too, owing to their CamelCasificationOfEverything; I mistakenly picked that user name in Wikipedia when aiming for "wwwwolf", and, that mistake revealed, didn't use Wikipedia at all for quite a while before getting sucked into it totally. =) (If I recall correctly, the username was created several, several months before I made my first edit!) And before you ask, no, I didn't create another user account because That's Not My Way. =)
Well, uh, it has helped me to get rid of my shyness (I'm just a random geek who got picked on in the school - not a great surprise, huh?) and I've met a lot of cool people.
And wolves are so cute.
Yes, I think it pays. =)
