Musings about maps and measurement

Today's big Avarthrel project was about getting grips of OpenLayers. I was surprised by the fact that taking my map and turning it into an easy-to-use scrollable thing was actually rather painless... as long as you remember to mention to the program that "hey, this map represents a... hum... flat-projected area from (0,0) to about (1629900,1225800) meters, give or take. I'm not a top-notch geographer, dammit." Actually getting the map to the web site would take some tiny effort on the template side - so I'll roll it out once the map is, shall we say, more interesting. Currently, you can just look at the map and adore the pixelated pixels by zooming in...

And thank goddess that I could actually just tell OpenLayers "the map is flat and it's about this big, deal with it." The annoying part of most software I've thought of using for assistance in world-building is that they tend to assume a lot - mostly a) that the user is an expert of the field or b) that you're using this program in Earth using modern forms of measurements.

I'm not super-good with geography - just recalling stuff from the school - so if the software would have wanted, say, exact coordinates where this map is from, I would have needed to seriously brush up my mathematics. (Let's see... I've usually figured Anchorfall would have been around the same latitude as, uh, say, Helsinki, so that's about 60 degrees north, right? OK, given that, how the heck do I convert this particular rectangle to degree coordinates? *scribble scribble scribble headache*)
Earth and Earth-like measurements can be a problem, too. In case of Avarthrel, I just skirted a lot of problems by noting that, by amazing coincidence, the planet is just about the same size as Earth and the year has the same number of days... and even more amazingly, the currently predominantly used calendar corresponds to Gregorian calendar, so my perpetual calendar applications actually work. But the same can't be said about the previously used calendars: Using the Imperial and Elven calendars needs some handwork to figure out the corresponding year. Now, how do I specify dates in those weird calendars in some of the programs I have at hand?
No, really?
For example, I'm using Storybook to manage the novel I'm writing. It can tell me that, oh yes, there's a revolution in my story, and it occurred one beautiful Saturday. (Or, er, Trinsday.) Easy enough. But the makers of Storybook make one big assumption here: Not everyone keeps time the same way. I can hardly blame them: it's not their fault that the author could decide that this particular world used different sort of a timekeeping system. The alternatives would be to allow free-form date entry (thus losing all neat functionality associated with dates), or allow the user to specify the timekeeping system from ground up.
So in short, it's pretty annoying to write fantasy (or SF, I guess): when the world doesn't work like Earth, the software isn't keeping up...

Avarthrel protagonists as Mii characters

...or, putting the Murder Simulators to good use.

So what do lonely people do when they don't have friends to play with? Fire up their Nintendo Wiis, Create Mii characters of people they obsess over and go play Wii Sports or whatever, happy to see that the other characters are cheering them on or playing in the same team. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating the geekiness - a) I am a geek, and b) a lot of people who actually have a life do that too, so it's actually good fun for the whole family! So here I am, turning my painstakingly created characters into Miis...

Well, as far as I can tell, these guys look pretty close to what I'm envisioning them. Not perfect, of course, but recognisable, and that's what really matters.

This is an ullustration (CC BY-ND 3.0) for the upcoming story, tentatively titled "Sweet Side of Death" - let's just quote this image's desc page in deviantART, "Faira Ativel's letter to her sister, concerning the her rediscovery of a goddess that has been completely forgotten in the whole of the continent - Carriglena, the Lady of Withering.". I somehow got the inspiration to draw this particular scene. Will probably write more about this story and how it came to be later on, but I've got to finish it first...

Logo stuff, and Other Random Editing

You might get impression that the new stories take an awful long time to come out. Yep, they do. I admit as much. But I've pledged that I'll get them out sometime within the next few weeks.

I got a bit lazy and unmotivated. But just yesterday I went on mad story fixing up session and edited tons of stuff in the wiki. Whoa, the wiki has over 100 articles now. Okay, most of them are stubs, but there's certainly tons of Interesting Stuff there.

I promised there would be no graphics this soon, but since the wiki has tons of stuff that probably qualifies as a half-done story in itself... the main Avarthrel page has a logo now. Whee. Doesn't look perfect yet, but maybe I'll tweak it later. I wished to wait until Xara LX was out, but it's just as the same to do this thing now...

AutoREALM works!

Just a random whee-ee. Apparently, AutoREALM has the honor of the most perfectly working app I've ever tried to use in WINE. Thus, the weird, probably unnecessary, yet quite rewarding task of mapping Avarthrel has started. I'm still waiting for the proper Linux version of this app, though... not to even mention some (ahem) now-standard features, like SVG support in and out.

Having a map is all good, because I have in my head some sort of idea on what the world looks like and having a real solid map will undoubtedly help a lot.

Graphics...

It's weird how when you have a fantasy world (at least part of it), and a website for it, it suddenly begs for its own graphical look and its own logo.

So here's some first reassurances: No graphics for now. I won't start even thinking of drawing stuff related to the world, graphics or even the website until I've finished the fifth short story. And even that, I'm sure, is far off. =)
