And now for something different

Megyntian salaisuus is out - that would be Hidden horrors of Megyntia in Finnish.

So far, crushing silence. =/

As noted earlier, ye gods, did I ever find bugs from this one. I really, really need to read the stuff I release again, again and again.

Translation reveals a lot

I'm working on a Finnish translation of Hidden Horrors of Megyntia. It has proven already to be a very interesting exercise.

First of all, I find it a bit odd myself that I find so comfortable to write in English. Maybe it's just that I don't read enough stuff in Finnish.

It's also interesting to note that when I take a random sentence in English and translate it, it turns out to be not quite that clever. Okay, part of that is just self-criticism, but some had to do with the text. I guess it's just healthy: It was, after all, the first story I wrote so it's only logical that some of the stuff isn't very good. I stumbled quite a few times here, even when I was happy with the outcome. I did read the thing through, but I need to read the next story really through before I publish it. Less clumsy things to stumble upon!

Wikitwiddling and ODF woes

A lot of twiddling has been done on the SnipSnap wiki front. The thing is working very nicely indeed, and has proven to be an invaluable tool for writing down background stuff.

The bigger problem is that I don't really have anything comparable to catdoc, in other words, I need a program to convert OpenDocument to plain text. I guess it's just a matter of time, though - there's already tools for converting OpenDocument files to XHTML, so I guess people just don't have enough boring afternoons to add conversion to plain text.

Progress, it seems

Whoa.

The newest story I was working on was 99% finished in Friday. It was picked up this week by a friend who promised to read through it.

This story was in works through the holidays, and made slow progress in the last few months.

What makes it so weird is that I never thought I'd make some arbitrary word limit, like 8000 words. I mean, the previous stories had a good length, right?

And suddenly, when I'm stumbitting it to a friend, I'm looking at a 11000-plus-some word monster.

And distressingly, my memory was as holey as it was: wc -w templeofleetness.txt (the actual file name of Hidden Horrors of Megyntia, incidentally) is 3847 words. Erm, I wonder where I came up with that ludicruous 8000-word limit?

Anyway, I hope to get comments from my friends soon enough; the new story might then be out by next week. I'll probably need to tweak it anyway.
